Obidvaja jeho rodičia boli vinohradníci. Študoval vo Viedni. Skrátil si meno na Mallin a v roku 1907 odišiel do USA. Usadil sa v Chicagu. Jednou z jeho prvých prác bola fasáda pre zábavný park Riverview v Chicagu.

V roku 1918 založil vlastnú dekoratérsku spoločnosť John A. Mallin, Interior Art Decorations. Špecializoval sa na výzdobu kostolov a cirkevnú maľbu, ako aj na umelecké sklo a mozaiky. Svoju filozofiu uviedol v jednej zo svojich komerčných brožúr: „Ako nie je nič príliš dobré pre Boha, tak nie je nič príliš bohaté alebo vzácne pre Božie pozemské domy – jeho kostoly“.
EN: In 1918 he founded his own decorating company, John A. Mallin, Interior Art Decorations. He specialized in church decoration and church painting, as well as art glass and mosaics. He stated his philosophy in one of his commercial brochures, „As nothing is too good for God, so nothing is too rich or precious for God’s earthly homes – His churches.“
V roku 1920 si otvoril štúdio v budove výtvarného umenia na 410 S. Michigan Avenue v historickej štvrti Chicaga Landmark Michigan Boulevard. Vyzdobil viac ako 100 kostolov, medzi nimi mnoho slovenských a českých. Zomrel 9. januára 1973 vo veku 89 rokov. V krematóriu na Českom národnom cintoríne v Chicagu má kryptu vyzdobenú jeho maľbami s 20. rokov 20. storočia.
EN: In 1920, he opened a studio in the Fine Arts Building at 410 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago’s Landmark Michigan Boulevard Historic District. He decorated more than 100 churches, including many Slovak and Czech churches. He died on January 9, 1973 at the age of 89. The crematorium at the Czech National Cemetery in Chicago has a crypt decorated with his paintings from the 1920s.
